Meet Ruby
My name is Ruby. I am 27 years old. I came to the YW because I have been going through some tough times.
Not long ago, everything in my life was going well. I was safe and comfortable in my home – in my life. But at the same time that I got laid off a couple of months ago, my husband and I realized we were no longer in a happy or healthy marriage. Now, overnight it seems, I find myself without a home and just a few dollars to my name.
The worst part was leaving some of my pets behind. Together, my ex-husband and I had two dogs and four cats – I love them like they’re my children. When our marriage started to fall apart, I quickly realized I wouldn’t have the money to take care of all of them on my own. I know leaving my husband was the best thing I could do for myself, but leaving two of my cats and my dog Polly behind was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
I was heartbroken, but luckily, I was able to keep my dog, Tucker. I was able to confidently search for housing knowing Tucker was being taken care of by a few friends in the area. Giving myself and him a better life has been my motivation!
I was at my lowest when I found the YW, but it did not take me long to settle in. The workers at the shelter got a bed ready for me right away. They were so nice! They served me the first hot meal I had had in weeks, and it was so good! After this nice meal, I visited my new room. In my room, I found a spare outfit, a phone, and other personal items. When I was cold, the workers got me a heater!
I felt very safe while staying at the YW’s King Street shelter. Thanks to the YW, I am finalizing the last necessary steps for me to get into my new bachelor apartment. I am getting some help from The Furniture Bank so I can feel a bit more at home in my new apartment. I am so excited to see my baby Tucker again. I finally feel ready to take back control over my life.
I wish all of the women staying at the shelter the best. Always stay positive. Brighter days are ahead and you can do anything you put your mind to!
Sincerely,
Ruby
