Dancing To Make A Difference
How did you get involved with the YWCA Niagara Region?
I was invited by the chair of the board many years ago to become a part of the YWCA Niagara Region board. It was very rewarding, and I ended up staying on the board for 2 or 3 years. Work was becoming busier for me and attending board meetings eventually became too difficult to keep up with. I knew I wanted to continue to work with YWCA Niagara Region and was given the opportunity to do so through my research at Brock University, where I work. The YWCA was always interested in being involved in research and we’ve been working together for a few years on this. This certainly helped to solidify my passion for this organization!
What prompted you to do this Zumba fundraiser?
I’ve always liked putting on fundraisers for my local community organizations. It’s a fun way to support my community. This particular fundraiser felt extra special as I teamed up with fellow Zumba instructor Jen Richards. She has many students, and it was heartwarming to see that even though many people couldn’t attend they still decided to donate to the fundraiser. It felt good to know I was getting the word out about an organization that I love to support.
What has your experience been like being a donor? Is it an easy process?
It’s a very easy process. I was able to sign up online to become a regular donor. I also follow the social media pages to keep up with what’s happening at the YW and how to be involved. There are so many ways to give back and everyone has different strengths to offer. Whether you want to volunteer, throw a fundraiser, or drop off nonperishable food during a food drive there are endless ways to help and if you’re unsure you can always call the fundraising office and just ask!
